motion is an annual two-day event that I co-produce with Becky Padilla. motion is known for bringing together the brightest and most creative minds in the motion graphics, visual effects {VFX}, and animation industries. Hundreds of brilliant minds come together every October to discuss trends, address relevant industry issues, and share their skills, work, and creative insight.

Over the years I’ve seen that all too often, creative energy is zapped by the demands of the industry. motion provides a unique venue that revitalizes creativity and provides a renewed sense of being. On numerous occasions, previous attendees have told me that prior to attending motion, they were seriously considering whether of not they wanted to continue working in the industry – and that after attending motion, they were reminded why they got into the field to begin with.

Whether you are new in the industry, eager to be inspired by the rock stars of motion graphics, animation, and vfx – or a veteran needing to be revitalized, I’d like to personally invite you to be a part of motion. Like so many past attendees, you’ll come away saying ‘there’s nothing like it!’

Kevin Silver from ClearWired is putting on Albuquerque’s very first BarCamp – or at least the first one I have heard of! The event will be held on 11/11/2006 – tentatively from 9am – 4:30pm. As of now, the location hasn’t been determined, although most likely it will be at CNM.

The subject matter will be ‘All things Web’. Present your ideas regarding design and technology for the web: got a trick or tip, want to share with the rest of the web community your latest project, explain why Pylons is da’ bomb, get down and dirty and tell us why you’re in love with faceted classifications, talk about the latest craze in design — reflections, or even hold a forum on the state of the web in New Mexico. Any topic that pertains to the web: development, design, programing, hosting, site management, internet software, product development — you get the idea — is welcomed. Kevin’s goal is for this event is simply want to have an open, educational and in-depth discussion on all things web.

Thus far, it has been a remarkable experience. Yesterday we spent the day in training – learning advocacy skills, as well as facts related to survivorship issues, research, and government funding. Unfortunately, the latter is the big issue. Funding for research has been cut dramatically in the past couple of years. Without funding, we cannot continue the momentum we have gained in the war on cancer.

I can speak about this on a personal level. 25 years ago, my brother was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma. At the young age of 14, he lost his valiant battle. The drugs, the technologies, the resources – they just weren’t there at the time.

21 years later, at the age of 42, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I feel blessed that having cancer at that time, was a whole different experience than 20 years prior. Research in the field of cancer survivorship had come a long way. I was given many opportunities my brother did not have. I was given my life.

We can’t loose this momentum. Last night we were at a congressional reception where Lance Armstrong was the keynote speaker and he said, “I believe we can win the war on cancer by 2015″. Those are powerful words. And after spending time here in D.C., working with the other delegates, and speaking with my representatives – I too believe this is possible.

But it is going to be up to all of us. We need to keep survivorship issues in the forefront of our government officials. It is up to us this Fall to elect officials that are in support of cancer survivorship issues, and in support of further government funding for research.

There is almost no one who hasn’t been touched by cancer. Whether it was a personal experience, a family member, or a close friend, cancer has become a part of all of our lives. Working together, we can make a difference. We can make change. We can make cancer a non-issue by 2015!
